CHARACTER
Name: Mordred
Canon: Merlin (BBC)
Age: 16
Demigod/Hunter/Satyr/Nymph: Magician, Path of Thoth
Abilities:
Mordred's specialty is elemental magic, and he is most skilled at manipulating fire. He is, much to his mild frustration, least skilled in the ways of wind. He, like other magicians, has the ability to summon portals. He is also able to charm Thoth's sacred animals, baboons and ibises.
Personality:
Mordred is likely an old soul in a young body. Despite his young age, his mannerisms imply wisdom beyond his years, although that may simply be because he's not as excitable as most boys his age. He's calm, polite, and well-spoken, attributes that have helped him effectively channel Thoth. Mordred isn't above acknowledging his own shortcomings, but this is more of a lack of ego than self-confidence. He's not a natural leader, but he considers himself a good judge of character, and will vehemently support those with a good cause. In that sense, he can be considered pretty loyal and trusting to those he deems deserving.
Betray his trust, however, and it's nearly impossible for him to forget and forgive. He most certainly holds grudges against those that have wronged him, and he's not above thoughts and intentions of revenge. It's highly, highly unlikely (read: not gonna happen) that he would go as far as he does in canon (which is... betraying and killing his king, Arthur Pendragon), but regaining his trust would be nearly impossible.
Unfortunately, he's also the type to bottle up negative emotions rather than make them known. This means that when anger does strike him, he's likely to quietly seethe and give others a cold shoulder. Sadness is easier to express, but preferably not in anyone else's presence.
Although he's confined to the camp now, Mordred remains a relatively self-sufficient and independent free spirit. He spends a lot of time alone reading, practicing his hieroglyphics, or taking care of the camp animals in the stables. It's not that he's unfriendly-- quite the contrary, but that he's too quiet to draw much attention to himself. He likes it that way, actually, preferring to observe and be amused by the antics of the other campers. This also means that Mordred can be quite calculating, adept at figuring out just what people like to hear in order to get on their good sides.
Because Mordred led a rather unconventional childhood surrounded by adults rather than kids his own age, he doesn't always "get" little nuances of social interactions. He doesn't have the best sarcasm detector, for example, and he's rather gullible. He's an easy target for harmless pranks, which should be a delight to the children of trickster gods should they find out. He's gotten a bit better with time, and he may even dish out his own teasing quip every now and then.
As a follower of the Path of Thoth, Mordred is constantly striving to better himself, whether it be in physical combat, academic knowledge, or his magic skills. He's far from the best at any of these, but he's a diligent pupil. Sure, he gets frustrated, especially if he's not making much progress that day, but he tries not to complain, and he's stubborn in his perseverance.
Mordred is a firm believer in treating every living thing with dignity and respect. As such, not only does he not wear animal skins, but he's also an ethical vegetarian. He easily forms close bonds with the animals in the camp, excluding those of a humanoid nature, although he enjoys their company as well. Provided they don't pose a threat to his safety, of course. Which isn't always the case...
AU History:
Mordred spent the first ten years of his life leading a rather nomadic lifestyle, as his parents were magicians perpetually struck with incurable wanderlust. They were assigned to the Ninth Nome in London, but his parents were the type to fulfill the absolute minimum of their duties. Put quite simply, his parents were huge hippies at heart. They led a minimalist lifestyle and traveled with like-minded souls, and by the time Mordred turned eight, he'd had more life experiences and exposure to different cultures than the average 20 year old.
When he turned ten, however, he was sent to the First Nome to begin his training. Mordred was miserable in his new home. He had little in common with the other children there, save for their shared ancestry, and he longed to spend his days wandering outdoors like he always had. Little Mordred became so withdrawn that for the first few months of his stay, many believed he was mute. Eventually, he was able to overcome his shyness, although he remained a boy of few words. What he lacked in sociability he made up for in with his studious nature. Unlike his parents, he developed a genuine interest in what he was, and developed a love for magic and trying to understand the gods.
At the age of fifteen, he resolved to join the Brooklyn House and follow the Path of Thoth. He felt like his studies had barely begun when he, like the other magicians, were needed to fight against Apophis. Mordred hadn't had much training at that point, especially compared to some of the more experienced students, but he fought valiantly.
He returned to the Ninth Nome shortly after, intending to spend his days both learning more about his craft and path. It felt as if he'd barely settled in before he was asked by Carter Kane to relocate to Half Blood Hill in order to help monitor the Chaos situation. He'd never encountered demigod children before, only heard of them, but if there was a task that needed to be done, Mordred would dutifully accept.
